Contest Rules
The Scholar's Choice will select the best lesson created each month; the user who created that lesson will win $50, and the winner's name and the link to his or her lesson will be posted here. All lessons created during any given month will be considered, but to ensure that your lesson is eligible to win, follow the rules below:

  1. Create your lesson while logged into your Scholar's Choice account so we know whom to contact should you win.

  2. Your lesson will be considered for a prize in the month that it is created. All lessons created between the first and last day of the month (e.g. between March 1, 2010 at 12:00 AM and March 31, 2010 at 11:59 PM) will compete against each other.

  3. The first month of competition will be March 2010. Competition will proceed in each month thereafter unless otherwise stated here.

  4. You may create a lesson on any topic for students in any grade level; lessons will not be judged on the complexity of the topic explained, but rather, by how well the topic selected is explained and presented for its intended audience.

  5. To be eligible to win, your lesson should contain:
    • Clear instructions,
    • A description,
    • Be classified correctly by department and subject,
    • Be classified correctly by grade level, e.g. If your lesson is classified as appropriate for young students, it must not contain any graphic content or language suitable only for older students, and
    • Correctly cite any sources used.

  6. To be eligible to win, your lesson should contain:
    • At least one multimedia resource (video, audio, animation, embedded video, or slideshow),
    • At least one written resource (document or spreadsheet),
    • At least one picture, and
    • At least one related website.

  7. To be eligible to win, your lesson should link to at least two related exercises. These exercises may be created by you, but need not be if you find other appropriate exercises already in existence on the site.

  8. Lessons will be judged on the basis of an equal combination of popularity, average rating, and quality of content, each taken or judged as of the 15th of the month following creation. For example, popularity and average rating for a lesson created in March will be determined on April 15th. Naturally, lessons created earlier in the competition month obtain an advantage since there will be more time for other users to view and rate these lessons.

  9. Lesson popularity will be calculated in the following way:

(# of times viewed * 10%) * (# of times marked as favorite) = popularity score

  10. Lesson quality will be determined on the basis of correctness and completeness of the topic covered, clarity of the explanation, and quality of the linked documents and exercises as resources to supplement students' learning, as judged by The Scholar's Choice staff. You may make changes to your lesson at any time, but lessons will be judged by The Scholar's Choice on the 15th of the month following creation.

  11. Winners will be posted to this page on the 20th of the month following creation. For example, March's winning lesson will be announced on April 20th.

  12. Lessons deemed inappropriate by The Scholar's Choice due to graphic content, language, or profanity will be removed from the site and disqualified from competition. If The Scholar's Choice determines that the content of a lesson is inappropriate for students in the grade level in which the lesson has been classified, The Scholar's Choice reserves the right to reclassify the lesson's grade level. If the lesson violates U.S. copyright law, it will be removed from the site and disqualified from competition. For further copyright information, read our full Terms and Conditions.

  13. The same lesson may not win more than once. You may not win more than twice in one calendar year.

  14. The Scholar's Choice reserves the right not to make an award in a given month if fewer than 15 lessons have been submitted. In such case, an announcement will be posted to this page and the lessons submitted during that month will be considered for the next month's prize, but popularity and rating data will be recorded on the 15th of the month in which they should have originally been judged so no additional time advantage is granted to the previous month's entries.

  15. All decisions made by The Scholar's Choice are final.
