As used in this privacy policy, "The Scholar's Choice" refers to The Scholar's Choice, LLC, a limited liability company formed in the state of Wisconsin, the owner and operator of this website. In this privacy policy, any reference to "parent" shall include legal guardian.
Information We Collect
When you register as a member of The Scholar's Choice, we collect personal information, including your first and last name, email address, birth date, gender, and school and affiliation. You are required to supply this information when you register as a member of the site.
If you complete a profile, you may also voluntarily provide other information, such as your profile photo, hometown, address, IM screen names, website, favorite subjects/classes, activities, books, music, movies, quotations, interests, languages spoken, schools or colleges attended, or jobs. When you link with people you know on the site, such as friends, teachers/students, or parents/children, we will record and store these relationships, and they will also be displayed on your profile page. You may choose which, if any, of this information to provide and may alter or delete this information at any time by logging into your account and editing your profile page.
How We Use/Disclose Information We Collect
You should remember that any information you post on your profile is viewable by other users of The Scholar's Choice if you have linked to them as a friend, parent/child, or student/teacher. You should always carefully consider what information you will post and to whom you will link on the site. If you have not linked to another user, your name, school, and a thumbnail of your profile photo will still appear in search results so other users can find you and request to link to you.
Beyond making your information available to other site users you have linked to, we may disclose your information to respond to legal requirements, enforce our terms and conditions, respond to claims that content you have posted infringes upon someone else's intellectual property rights, or to protect others' rights, property, or safety. We may also share your information with service providers with whom we have contracted to provide processing of credit card transactions should you make a purchase on the site, with online retailers should you win a prize on the site (so your prize can be sent to you), with tutors or instructors should you purchase online tutoring or enroll in a class, and other service providers with whom we've contracted to help us with various business operations.
When you visit The Scholar's Choice, we may collect information about the type of browser you are using, your location, IP address, and the pages you visit. We also use "cookies" (small pieces of data we store for an extended period of time on your computer, mobile phone, or other device) to make The Scholar's Choice easier to use. For instance, we use cookies to store your email address and password if you select the "Remember Me" option in the login module, and we use cookies to confirm that you are logged in to The Scholar's Choice. How We Obtain Parental Consent to Collect Information about Children Under 13
When a child under the age of 13 attempts to register to become a member of The Scholar's Choice, we collect his/her registration information (defined above) along with a parent's name and email address. The child's information is stored in our database with a status of "pending" until we can obtain verifiable parental consent. We will email the parent explaining what their child may do as a member of The Scholar's Choice along with a link to this privacy policy and our terms and conditions of site use, and instructions on how to call us to grant his/her child permission to be a member of the site. Prior to receipt of verifiable parental consent, the child's information is not available to anyone, nor is the child allowed to access the site.
How Parents Can View or Delete Information about Their Child Under 13
Once a parent has consented to allow his/her child to register as a member of The Scholar's Choice, the parent may view the child's profile by logging into his/her parent account (the parent must first have created a parent account and must have linked to his/her child as a parent). Parents are encouraged to speak to their children about the information the child is allowed to post on his/her profile; however, the parent may also contact The Scholar's Choice to ask that we delete specific information or the child's entire account.
Third-Party Advertising
We use third-party advertising companies to serve ads when you visit our website. These companies may use information (not including your name, address, email address, or telephone number) about your visits to this and other websites in order to provide advertisements about goods and services of interest to you.
