What are prizes?
While learning for learning's sake is commendable, a little extra motivation never hurts. That's why The Scholar's Choice created an infrastructure that allows parents and teachers to provide prizes for a lesson learned or a job well done. Prizes can make homework and studying more fun. A parent can set up a prize for a single child just for completing an activity, or teachers can set up prizes that allow a whole class of students to compete against each other to learn the material for the next test the same way they compete against each other to achieve the highest score on a popular video game--and get something for it.
Prizes come in all shapes and sizes. A parent's prize might be a candy bar or a night out at the movies for getting a high score on several flash card activities or achieving the target number of words per minute on a reading fluency exercise. A teacher might provide tickets to a school play or sporting event to the student who achieves the fastest time on a visual identification exercise. Teachers or parents can provide prizes themselves, as in the examples above, or purchase gift certificates in small denominations for students to redeem for something of their choice at the nation's largest online retailer.
Either way, the user who sets up the prize can specify who is elibigle to win it and how and when the prize can be earned. The user who creates the prize will be notified who the winner is, and regardless of what the prize is, winners will receive badges to display on their profiles, a sign of mastery that all their friends can see.

Why Incentivize Students to Learn?
Shouldn't learning be its own reward? Yes, it should. But for students who have trouble seeing the connection between learning now and achieving success in the future, a prize can bridge the gap and help create motivation and good study habits that will last long after the prizes have been redeemed. Preliminary results and anecdotal evidence from recent studies conducted by Harvard researchers on the effects of incentivizing learning suggest that these strategies can help.
